A Day at the Camp Ground

Current Camping Trips

Monthly camping trips are planned from May through October.  Locations are selected by those participating in the trips.  Most trips are 2 to 5 hours drive from McHenry County.  Campers show up in their choice of lodging from tents, to trailers, to motor homes and some come and stay in nearby motels. Leaders have volunteered to plan the routes and make the group arrangements for the campground. The dates are usually the third week in the month, from Monday through Friday with individuals reserving the days they can come.

Each morning of the campout will find the campers  moving about, finishing breakfast, deciding on weather conditions,  talking about the days upcoming ride, and getting ready to meet at the starting time.  By 9:30 they file out of the campground in search of new territory to ride.  The leader has briefed them on the day's route and with cue sheet in hand, snacks or lunch in their bags they soon are pedaling along to reach the first place to eat.  Now this becomes the most important point of the ride - "where are we going to meet for lunch?  The distance and degree of difficulty vary from day to day and trip to trip - but they all get out and ride some, every day enjoying the new sites, roads and scenery.

By mid afternoon, all the riders arrive back at their campsite and usually disappear for a couple of hours for their own time.  Some nap, while others shop, read, hike, swim - whatever they choose.

About 5:15 the gathering happens-the campfire is lit, the campers start arriving with snacks, lawn chairs and beverages in hand.  After a few stories from the days ride supper plans get underway.  Some fix their dinner early, the first to use the grill, others wait until later, and a few even go out for their dinner.  In fact they always plan at least one dinner out together.  As the sun goes down, dinner things are put away, deserts and coffee come from somewhere and are soon enjoyed by all at the campfire site.  After a few more stories and tall tales,  the tired campers soon find their beds for the night - and usually quite early because, after all - they get to get up and do it all again tomorrow.

The real joy of such a trip is not only the camaraderie that takes place, but the relaxing atmosphere  experienced at a campground, away from the usual chores of home.  The trips vary some from year to year with a couple of  favorites repeated annually.

It's been especially nice to have non-campers join the group more these last 2 years. The schedule is listed on this website and in the monthly newsletter.  Even though group reservations are made during the winter months, there usually  is always room for those who make plans after that.  If this sounds like something you would like to join in on, please contact Ruth Blair (815-943-7884) dorandruth@charter.net or the leader listed for each ride to get more information  and find out how to make reservations or find lodging.  The more the merrier - come join for  what ever days you can.
